5 things most parents don't know about kids' earrings

You know what cheap earrings did to your ears. She doesn't have to find out the way you did.

Maybe it started when you were a teenager. Itchy lobes by the end of the day, a red ring around the post, and a cute pair you loved sitting in a drawer because you couldn't keep them in for more than a few hours.

Somebody told you that you had sensitive ears, so you bought "nickel free," then "hypoallergenic," then "for sensitive ears," and some of them still made your ears itch. Maybe you painted the posts with clear nail polish before a night out, or gave up and only wear real gold now. Nobody ever explained what was actually in those earrings. You worked it out the hard way.

Drag to compare.Illustrative: skin reacts differently from person to person.

Plenty of girls wear cheap earrings for years without a problem, and she might be one of them. But ears can change, and yours did. One year earrings were just earrings, then the itching started, and you were standing in a store reading the back of a card and trying to work out what any of it meant. A nickel allergy usually builds up over repeated contact, which is why it can show up years after the first pair. If you had known then what you know now, you would have chosen differently. With her, you still can.

Gold color doesn't mean gold underneath.

A gold-tone earring can be cheap metal with a thin coat on top, and the card won't tell you which.

The back sits against her skin too.

Most of us only look at the front. The post and the butterfly back are against her skin all day.

It doesn't always happen right away.

Some girls react in two days.Others wear the same pair for two months first.

Nickel is one of the most common causes of skin reactions to jewelry, and there is still no US law limiting how much nickel an earring can release. Sources: AAD; AAP 2020.

"But I always buy hypoallergenic"

"Hypoallergenic" sounds reassuring. It doesn't tell you what the earring is made of.

It isn't a regulated word.

There's no legal definition, and no test a brand has to pass before it prints the word on the card.

It doesn't tell you what's under the gold color.

It also says nothing about the post or the butterfly back, which is where a lot of brands use cheaper metal.

You've probably been here before.

You tried a new pair from a different brand with another reassuring label, and by Sunday your ears were sore again.

No US law requires a jewelry brand to tell you what its metals are, either in the earring or in the back. Both sit against her skin all day.

After everything your own ears put you through, you should get a real answer instead of a word on a card. So here's ours, every part of it.

You've heard "hypoallergenic" before.

This is why we made purepixxi

We didn't set out to make another line of kids' earrings. We set out to answer one question for our own family: what would we actually put in our daughter's ears?

The answer was two materials, and we'll tell you exactly what they are. The core of the whole earring is S316L Surgical Steel, and over it is Aunix™ 24K, our pure 24 karat gold finish. That goes for every part of the earring, not just the front: the setting, the post and the butterfly back.

  1. The claw setting of a purepixxi stud, front on.

    1 The setting

S316L Surgical Steel, finished in pure 24 karat gold

  2. The post of a purepixxi stud, with the security notch that holds the back.

    2 The post

The same steel and the same gold, with a notch that holds her back on

  3. The butterfly back of a purepixxi stud.

    3 The butterfly back

The part most brands make cheaper.Ours is the same steel and the same gold

Three parts touch her skin, and all three are made the same way.Real photos, not drawings.

The part behind her ear matters as much as the part everyone sees, so we didn't use a cheaper post or swap in a cheaper back where nobody would notice.

"Real gold" isn't one thing.

The karat tells you how much of the earring is actually gold. Whatever isn't gold is other metals, often including nickel and copper, and nobody has to tell you which ones.

Independently tested

You shouldn't have to take our word for it.

Anybody can make a claim, so we had ours tested. The US has real safety standards for kids' jewelry, ASTM F2923 and CPSIA, and SGS, an independent lab, tested purepixxi earrings against them. They tested the earring, the post and the butterfly back. The report is BTO 341803/1, and every purepixxi earring is made to that same specification, with the same S316L Surgical Steel, the same Aunix™ 24K finish and the same back.

There's a dad behind all of this

Matt Westmore, founder of purepixxi.
Matt WestmoreFounder and dad

"I didn't build purepixxi because there was a gap in the market. I built it because there was a little girl."

My name is Matt Westmore. My family owns the largest fashion accessories business in South Africa. From the age of seven I was on buying trips to Asia, watching how jewelry gets designed, made, priced and labeled long before it reaches a shelf in a store. I have stood on the production lines. I have seen the gap between what an earring looks like and what actually goes into it.

I know which components get specified carefully and which ones get value-engineered. The butterfly back is almost always the latter.

I grew up inside this industry. What I saw is why I built this differently.

I also understand personally what it means when the body can't tolerate what it's exposed to. Three years ago I woke up with the complete loss of use of my right hand. After months of misdiagnosis I was told I had developed MMN, Multifocal Motor Neuropathy, a lifelong autoimmune neurological condition. My daughter was one year old.

I have a daughter who will soon want to wear earrings. I wasn't willing to put on her what I had seen coming off those production lines. So I started asking what would be considered safe enough to sit on a child's skin every day, and built purepixxi from the answer.

The problem is not finding earrings. The challenge is finding one brand that is honest about what they're actually made of. That is the one thing purepixxi was built to do. To be honest.

Every purepixxi earring follows one simple rule."If it's not good enough for my daughter, it's not good enough for yours."

Questions we always get

The questions moms ask us most. Answered straight.

My daughter has had reactions before. Is Surgical Steel actually different?

It's a named steel grade instead of a mystery alloy, which means it can actually be tested. S316L Surgical Steel does contain nickel, but it's locked into the steel. What matters for skin is how much nickel comes out of it, and SGS found none detected using the EN 1811 method, on the earring, the post and the back. Everyone's skin is different, so we won't promise she'll never react. What we can do is show you exactly what was tested and give you 30 days to try them yourself first.

Is the gold finish gold plated?

Yes. It's a pure 24 karat gold finish, Aunix™ 24K, over an S316L Surgical Steel core. What's different is what's in the gold and what's under it. Most gold-plated earrings use lower-karat gold, which is part other metals, over a base metal nobody names. Ours is pure 24 karat gold over a named steel that has been tested.

Why 24K gold and not 18K or 14K?

Lower-karat gold is mixed with other metals. 14K is 41.7% other metals and 9K is 62.5%, often including nickel and copper. 24K is 99.9% gold, so the surface touching the ear is gold.

What's the difference between the two pairs?

Just the size. Yours is the 5mm claw-set solitaire, sized for adult ears. Hers is the same solitaire at 4mm. Same steel, same gold finish, same butterfly back.

Is the butterfly back the same Surgical Steel?

Yes. On both pairs the post, the setting and the butterfly back are S316L Surgical Steel finished in pure 24 karat gold. The back is where a lot of brands save money. SGS tested ours, and nickel release was not detected.

What if she still has a reaction?

Email orders@purepixxi.com and we'll refund you in full within 30 days of delivery, worn or not. Everyone's skin is different, and no brand can promise how yours or hers will react. What we can do is name every material, show you the lab report, and take the risk off you while you find out. We'd also want to hear about it, because that's how we keep ourselves honest.

Can I see the lab report?

Yes. It's SGS report BTO 341803/1, and you can read the full report here. Every purepixxi earring is made to the material specification in it, including the Mom & Me set. If you have questions about it, email info@purepixxi.com.

What age are these for?

purepixxi is made for girls with healed piercings. The 4mm solitaire suits young ears from around six and up, and the 5mm is the adult size.

How long does delivery take?

Shipping is free and tracked anywhere in the US. You'll get a tracking number as soon as your order leaves us.

What does the lifetime guarantee cover?

Craftsmanship defects and material failure, for life. If a pair fails because of how it was made or what it's made of, we replace it. Just email orders@purepixxi.com with your order number.
